The Peterborough Wolverines Jr. Varsity football team’s season came to an end on Saturday when they were defeated by the Scarborough Thunder 35-19 in the Ramsay Conference (East) semi-final game hosted by the Wolverines at the TASS Field. The Wolverines end with a 7-2 overall record and unfortunately both defeats were to the Thunder.

The Scarborough squad was well prepared to face the Wolverines and quickly jumped out to16-0 in the first quarter before the Wolverines were able to score a TD on a 31 yard fumble return by Noah Thompson. That play briefly changed the momentum to the Wolverines who were able to score a long 74 yard TD on a pass play from QB Kurt Cantello to Mack McFarlane who was able to out run the defense for the TD that closed the Thunder’s lead to 16-13 near the end of the quarter. The Thunder quickly bounced back scoring a TD to increase their lead to 23-13 and just before the half ended the Wolverines scored a TD on another pass play from Cantello to Max LeVasseur to close out the first half with the Thunder ahead 23-19.

The second half belonged to the Thunder as they outscored the Wolverines 12-0. They were able to take advantage of the Wolverines mistakes and turnovers to deny the home club of a possible come from behind win. Scarborough used their balanced running and passing offense and a strong defense to take away the Wolverines chances in the second half. Scarborough with their victory will now advance to the Ramsay Conference Championship next week end against the undefeated Etobicoke Eagles.

Scoring for the Wolverines with a TD each were Noah Thompson, Mack McFarlane and Max LeVesseur. Spenser Vesnaver recorded a convert kick. The Wolverines even with the lost to the Thunder have had a good season especially with only 15 players returning from their 2017 OFC Championship season. This year’s team was able to improve and unfortunately faced a very strong and talented Thunder squad on Saturday. The Wolverines played hard and can be pleased with their overall 2018 season.

The Wolverines Football Club wants to thank all the Wolverines players for their participation and wish them a continued successful football experience as they move forward to their respective university, high school and KMFL programs this fall. Also, a sincere thank you to our coaches, volunteers and our great fans for their dedication and support of the Wolverines Program!
